Visit the Palace and the Basilica

The Entrance to the Basilica is free. The palace can only be visited by guided tours. Only seeing the library is worth to do so.

The National Palace of Mafra.

The construction works began in 1717 led by the German born architect Johann Friedrich Ludwig. The basilica and the convent have been inaugurated in 1730. Nevertheless, the work was not finished at that time. The dome of the basilica has been completed in 1735 and the works continued until 1755. The terrible earthquake forced the King to suspend the work because all the forces of the country where needed to rebuilt the capital and other cities.
